CLOTHING CLOSET

The Clothing Closet helps clients meet their critical clothing needs for the whole family, including new socks and underwear. If you love working with clothing and consider yourself a fashionista come and help style the Valley! Read more The selection of clothing available for all ages gives clients the opportunity to ensure that growing children have clothes that fit, adults can dress confidently for the workplace, all individuals are warm and comfortably dressed in the winter months, and that all have access to the basic clothing needs of socks and underwear.

Client Host: Host clients through the shopping process; display clothing.

FOOD SHELF

The Food Shelf provides non-perishable items (canned and boxed foods) in addition to fresh produce, deli items, milk, eggs, margarine, frozen meats and other perishable products as available. If you love working directly with people or behind the scenes the Food Shelf offers you that variety. Read more Clients are able to "shop" for their food, selecting the items that are most appropriate for their needs.

Client Hosts: Welcome clients to Valley Outreach and be their guide while they shop in the Food Shelf. During any down time, assist with maintaining the presentation of the Food Shelf. Could include assisting in different areas of the Food Shelf:  greet, protein area or use the scale.

Food Rescue Specialists

Volunteer drivers are needed to pick up food donations during the week and on weekends and holidays and be a back-up driver for regular drivers. An ability to lift up to 50 pounds and have a medium or large vehicle is desired. Must follow safe food transport guidelines. A background check is required for all volunteers who drive for Valley Outreach.

  • Daily Food Rescue Specialists: Pick up donations at local stores and deliver to Valley Outreach.
  • On-Call Food Rescue Specialists: Schedule varies and must be available by phone

Warehouse: If you like being active and working behind the scenes volunteering in the warehouse is for you!

  • Warehouse Assistant: Receive and unload deliveries; manage incoming inventory and keep sufficient product in the Food Shelf. Most positions require lifting 10-50 pounds, standing for 2-3 hours and using FIFO inventory principles and food safety guidelines.
  • Green Thumb: Water our herb garden daily (seasonal).

  • Bonus Friday Food Rescue Distributor: In a fast paced, high energy environment help sort, arrange and distribute rescued produce and other goods during Bonus Friday (a food rescue program).

The Valley Outreach Snack Pack program aims to alleviate hunger over the weekends for elementary school children. Through providing two days of supplemental food items – breakfast, lunch, and snack options – Snack Pack seeks to improve the health and wellness of local students. Come and help feed kids who don’t get enough to eat over the weekends!

  • Snack Pack Packers: Snack Packs are packed on Thursday evenings from 5-7 p.m. during the school year. This is a family-friendly opportunity. Snack packs then are counted and boxed up by school and weighed. To see youth guidelines click here. To see Snack Pack Volunteer Guidelines click here.

Mobile Choice

The Mobile Choice program provides food to community members who cannot shop at the Food Shelf because of limited mobility due to age, health and/or disability. The food is selected for them by a volunteer and delivered to their home. Mobile Choice occurs the third Thursday of every month from 10:00am-2:00pm. This position requires a 6-month commitment.

  • Remote Client Host: Serve as a client host without the clients being present. You will be given the responsibility to shop for the clients from a client preference list.
  • Mobile Choice-Delivery Specialist: Deliver groceries to clients who are unable to make it in to the Food Shelf. Background checks are required for all volunteers who drive for Valley Outreach.

Major Food Drives

Valley Outreach is looking for volunteers to help us with organizing our major food drives in the spring. You can help receive and sort donations from other food drive campaigns. These are group-friendly volunteer opportunities. Please contact the Volunteer Manager for current schedules.

·         March Food Share Drive:

During the month of March we are the recipient of thousands of pounds of food. Most of the food is picked up at the end of the month. During April this food has to be sorted, date-checked, boxed and stored in the warehouse.

·         National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive – May:

The postal workers hold a food drive the second Saturday in May. We need individuals and groups to sort, date check, box and store the donations in the warehouse.

INTAKE CLIENT CONCIERGE

(INTAKE VOLUNTEERS): If you enjoy working with people on a one-on-one basis this is the volunteer opportunity for you.

Valley Outreach intake volunteers assist clients with registration prior to their Food Shelf, Clothing Closet and/or emergency fund visit. Intake Volunteers offer clients information about additional resources available to them. This position requires a six-month commitment and a background check.

Valley Outreach is looking for a friendly face and voice with strong communication and administration skills at our front desk to help answer phones, greet people, accept donations, and assist with administrative duties and special projects. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

We are building a Volunteer IT Corps. The volunteer hours are flexible based on your schedule. Remote work is an option! An hour or two a month is a perfect place to start!

Tasks include:

·         Installing and setting up Windows PC’s

·         Wiring networks or pulling cable

·         Trouble shooting PC issues

·         Managing Windows servers

·         Working with virtual servers

  • Coordinate your own food collection in your neighborhood, school, or local business, it would be a great help! Please follow this link for more details.
  • During March Food Share month we have partners that can match food and dollar donations so your donation may be doubled. Have a food drive in March!! We can provide signs for your food drive in your church or neighborhood. Food Drives can also be done any time of the year.
  • Host a paper bag drive. We are always in need of paper grocery bags for our clients to use while shopping.

  • Valley Outreach is and has been the recipient of thousands of pounds of fresh produce from the RCS Giving Garden since 2009. They are asking for help weeding and harvesting their huge garden. Weeding can happen anytime – you just need to meet with Kathy first and she’ll show you whatt to do!! It’s a great opportunity for you and your family to volunteer together. Harvesting includes dropping off whatever you harvest at Valley Outreach right after you harvest!!

  • Tasks – harvest and wash the produce, deliver directly to Valley Outreach (no weeding).
  • Qualifications – need to be physically capable of harvesting (e.g. bending, stooping, kneeling, etc.).
  • Bring water to drink, gloves if you want them.
  • A short training is provided
  • Children are allowed for some opportunities – it depends on the task/item to be harvested. Some harvesting uses sharp knives (like broccoli), others involve crawling in the dirt (like potatoes).

Seasonal Clothing changes: Help ready the Clothing Closet for the next season by restocking it in September for fall/winter and in March for spring/summer. Check with the Volunteer Manager for dates.

Sort the bountiful donations of clothing: We are fortunate to be the recipient of the generosity of the St. Croix Valley community. Help to sort the articles of clothing that come into Valley Outreach so our clients can get in-season clothing every month.

SERVICE LEARNING

College students needing to do hours for service learning projects are welcome to volunteer at Valley Outreach. Check out the schedules for the Food Shelf and the Clothing Closet for additional information.

CORPORATE GIVING DAYS

We are always looking for business partners. Valley Outreach would love to partner with you in organizing a corporate volunteer service day, holiday party, and/or a food drive where your employees can give their time to directly benefit Valley Outreach. It will benefit everyone involved, especially those who need it the most. Dates and times can be scheduled with the Volunteer Manager.

YOUTH GROUPS

We always welcome youth volunteer groups to help out with one time projects or events. Valley Outreach currently works with several church youth Summer Stretch groups who have helped us with numerous food projects, along with cleaning, sorting and stocking our Food Shelf and Clothing Closet. Dates and times can be scheduled with the Volunteer Manager.
