Last year, more than 9 million visits were made to food shelves across Minnesota—over 2.5 times the number of visits recorded in 2019. Behind that number are individuals and families who are working hard to make ends meet and turning to local food shelves for support.
On Saturday, May 9, you can make a direct impact by participating in the National Association of Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. This nationwide effort is one of the largest single-day food drives in the country, helping to fill food shelves across the county.
How it Works
In partnership with local post offices, Stamp Out Hunger makes it simple to give. Donated food is picked up from your mailbox by your letter carrier and delivered to local partners like Valley Outreach. From there, items are sorted and distributed to individuals and families in the community who need them most.
This streamlined process makes it easy to give what you can—right from your doorstep.
How to Participate
- If you live in Stillwater, Bayport, or Lake Elmo, keep an eye out for a blue bag in the mail from Valley Outreach
- Fill the bag with nonperishable food items (check out our top needed items here)
- Place it by your mailbox on the morning of Saturday, May 9
- Your letter carrier will pick it up during their regular route
Didn’t receive a blue bag? No problem. Any bag will work—just leave it out for collection on May 9.
Prefer to Give Financially?
Monetary donations are another powerful and flexible way to support this effort. Financial gifts help keep shelves stocked with the items clients need most, especially during high demand or shortages. They also help us respond quickly to gaps and ensure families can access the foods that best meet their needs.
Every Act of Support Matters
Whether you donate food, give financially, or simply help spread the word, your participation plays an important role in ensuring that no one in our community has to face hunger alone.
Stamp Out Hunger is more than a food drive—it’s a moment of collective care, where small individual actions add up to a meaningful impact for thousands of neighbors.
