At StyleXchange, sustainability is more than giving gently used clothing a second life. It’s about the people who donate, shop, and find new possibilities in clothing that still has more to give. It’s also about finding ways to keep clothing in use for as long as possible and reducing textile waste.

Our new StyleXchange Repurpose Program puts that commitment to sustainability into action by giving clothing another purpose when we can no longer sell or distribute it.

When Clothing Doesn’t Find a New Home

Not every item that comes through StyleXchange finds a new home. Sometimes, clothing can sit on the sales floor for an extended period of time before being moved to clearance. Even then, some pieces may not find the right person.

There are also items twith minor imperfections which don’t meet our quality standards such as a missing button or a small rip. We’re committed to providing shoppers with high-quality clothing, but we also believe these items can still have value and serve a purpose elsewhere.

Instead of throwing these items away, we found a better solution.

A New Purpose for Unused Clothing

Through the StyleXchange Repurpose Program, we donate unsold or undistributed clothing to organizations that can put it to use. By connecting quality clothes with other organizations that need them, we can extend the life of each item and keep usable textiles out of the waste stream. What may no longer work for StyleXchange can still be valuable for other important programs.

So far, we have donated clothing to the following organizations:

• Anything Helps: Supports communities affected by the opioid epidemic by helping people overcome barriers and build a path toward long-term recovery.
• Black Butterfly Women’s Services: Provides a supportive, safe community for justice-involved women and women in recovery as they pursue a better future.
• HIRED: Helps people overcome barriers to employment by providing career services, training, and connections to jobs.
• Nine Lives Thrift Store: Keeps clothing within the community by making sustainable, affordable fashion accessible while supporting a more circular economy.
• Small Sums: Outfits individuals experiencing housing instability with the required work items needed to start and keep a new job.

These partnerships show just how many ways clothing can make a positive impact, sometimes beyond the Valley Outreach community. A piece that may no longer be right for our sales floor could help someone prepare for a new job, provide clothing for a family, or support someone working toward recovery and greater stability.

A Program Already Making an Impact

Although the Repurpose Program only launched a few months ago, we’re already excited about what it can accomplish.

So far, we’ve donated 813 pounds of clothing to local organizations. And the impact goes beyond keeping clothing out of the waste stream.

At Anything Helps, our donations helped launch a baby and kids’ section in their clothing closet, giving families access to clothing they need and can feel good about wearing.

The donations were ready to go straight into closets, without creating an extra burden for volunteers. They were high-quality, dignified pieces that people were genuinely excited to wear.

Creating a More Sustainable Future

Sustainability doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes, it means making a different choice with something that already exists.

At StyleXchange, we’re proud to be part of a cycle that keeps clothing moving to the people who need it. Whether it’s sold in our store or donated to a community organization, we’re finding ways to give clothing another purpose.

Every repurposed item is one less piece of clothing going to waste and one more opportunity to support the community.
