June is Pride Month. This year we invite you to be curious and go a little deeper into the heritage months we honor in the United States.
Throughout the month of June, communities in the U.S. and many other nations hold events celebrating people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender – often collectively described as Gay or LGBTQ+ Pride. According to Britannica.com (video), the month makes space, “to honor the struggle for equal rights by members of the LGBTQ+ community and to highlight the progress made.” The month of June marks pivotal milestones in LGBTQ+ advocacy starting with the Stonewall Inn rebellion on June 28, 1969.
Minnesota has a rich history of LGBTQ+ people. The first Pride parade in Minneapolis was a protest march down Nicollet Mall in 1972 on the third anniversary of Stonewall. With this year’s Twin Cities Pride Festival expected to draw up to 400,000 visitors over June 28 – 30th.
