As summer sets in, we often associate it with sunny vacations and carefree days. However, for many families, the summer months bring about a pressing concern: access to food. Food shelf services help bridge the gap during this time, so children and their families have access to nutritious meals. Last year, Valley Outreach served more than 27,000 people, and 89% increase over the previous year. This statistic highlights the critical role that our services play in combating hunger and food insecurity in the state.
Why is the need for food so high during the summer months?
During the school year, Minnesota provides free lunches to children from low-income households. This program serves as a lifeline for many families, to ensure children receive at least one nutritious meal a day. However, when summer arrives, children are no longer in school and lose access to this invaluable support.
The absence of free school lunches during the summer intensifies the strain on families already struggling to make ends meet. Food shelf services become a lifeline for these families, providing them with essential sustenance during this challenging period.
How can the community support Valley Outreach during this time?
It is crucial for the community to rally together for local food shelf services during the summer. Donating non-perishable food items, organizing food and fund drives, volunteering time, or making financial donations helps Valley Outreach support families.
During July, Valley Outreach is participating in the Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless summer challenge. Participating Minnesota food shelves will receive a grant proportional to the food shelves’ fundraising activities throughout the month of July. The more funds we raise in July, the bigger the grant! Your gifts will help us continue our vital work and address the heightened needs during this busy time of year.
