At Valley Outreach, we believe everyone deserves access to fresh, healthy food in a welcoming environment. That’s why we’re proud to be a SuperShelf—a model that transforms the traditional food shelf into a space that feels more like a neighborhood grocery store.
So, what is a SuperShelf?
SuperShelf is a collaborative approach that focuses on increasing access to nutritious foods while creating a dignified, client-centered experience. In 2012, Valley Outreach partnered with Lakeview Hospital to launch Better Shelf for Better Health, the pilot program that later became SuperShelf. We are the first of more than 80 sites in Minnesota to earn SuperShelf certification.
The core ideas behind SuperShelf include:
- Choice: Guests can browse and select the foods that best suit their preferences and dietary needs.
- Health: SuperShelves prioritize fresh produce, whole grains, lean proteins, and other nutritious options.
- Dignity: The space is bright, clean, and welcoming, designed to reduce stigma and support the well-being of everyone who visits.
By offering more nutritious options in a supportive setting, people can make healthy choices with confidence.
What’s next for SuperShelf?
Today, this evidence-based program is administered by the University of Minnesota Extension through SNAP-Ed. However, the future of SuperShelf is uncertain—federal funding for SNAP-Ed was cut in the recent reconciliation bill, effective October 1, 2025.
Help Stock Our SuperShelf with Garden Fresh Produce
Summer brings an abundance of delicious, local produce—and whether it’s from a backyard garden, community plot, or farmers market, fresh fruits and vegetables are at their peak. At Valley Outreach, we’re especially grateful for community members who choose to share their garden harvest with us.
If your garden is overflowing with tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, or herbs, we welcome your donations! Garden-gleaned produce helps us keep our SuperShelf stocked with vibrant, seasonal food that our shoppers truly appreciate.
Why your garden matters:
- Fresh, homegrown produce adds variety and flavor to our shelves.
- It supports our mission to offer healthy, high-quality food to all.
- It connects neighbors through the simple joy of sharing food.
How to donate garden produce:
- Please bring clean, quality fruits and vegetables—free of mold or damage.
- Donations can be dropped off during our regular food donation hours: Monday: 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. and Tuesday / Thursday: 1:30 – 6:30 p.m.
Together, we can turn the summer harvest into something truly meaningful—nourishing our community and living the values behind SuperShelf.
